October Events in San Francisco: What’s Worth Getting Out For |
Fleet Week, Litquake, neighborhood festivals and outdoor adventures make October one of the city’s busiest months |

October events in San Francisco have a way of reminding residents why fall may be the city’s best season.
The fog often loosens its grip, the calendar fills up, and suddenly there are more worthwhile things to do than weekends to fit them into.
Fleet Week runs October 4 through 12, with ship tours, neighborhood concerts and waterfront activities spread across the week.
The biggest crowds arrive October 9 through 11 for the air show, while the Parade of Ships is scheduled for Friday morning along the waterfront.
If you would rather stay at ground level, Fleet Fest at Fisherman’s Wharf on October 10 and 11 adds live music, food, family activities and opportunities to see ships and first responders up close.
Translation for locals: this is a good weekend to use transit and give yourself extra time anywhere near the northern waterfront.
October is also a strong month for people who prefer books to Blue Angels.
Litquake stretches through October 24 with readings, conversations and literary events around the city, ending with its signature Lit Crawl in the Mission.
That mix of big-name programming and smaller neighborhood gatherings is exactly what makes the festival feel so San Francisco.
For something outdoors and considerably quieter, the city is celebrating Walktober with guided and self-guided walks that encourage residents to explore San Francisco on foot.
Routes and organized outings range from neighborhood walks to longer urban hikes, making it an easy excuse to discover a staircase, trail or view you have somehow missed for years.
Sometimes the best San Francisco event is simply seeing a familiar neighborhood from a different direction.
Neighborhood festivals keep the month moving after the first big weekends.
The Potrero Hill Festival returns October 17 with food, music and family activities, while Sunday Streets brings a car-free community celebration to the Excelsior on October 18.
Art lovers can also catch SF Open Studios through October 25, when artists across the city invite the public into their working spaces.
Later in the month, the LEAP Sandcastle Classic returns to Ocean Beach on October 24, pairing ambitious sand sculptures with support for arts education.
And then, of course, San Francisco rolls straight into Halloween.
Family activities, costumes, neighborhood celebrations and Día de los Muertos programming begin appearing across the city during the final stretch of October.
The trick is not finding something to do; it is deciding what deserves a spot on your calendar.
For the first issue of The SF Brief, our advice is simple: pick one major event, one neighborhood event and one thing you have never done before.
That is a pretty good formula for enjoying October in San Francisco without spending the entire month fighting crowds. |
