San Francisco's holiday season gets an early start on Wednesday, November 4, when the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink returns to Union Square. The outdoor rink is scheduled to operate through January 18, 2027, bringing skating and special events to the heart of downtown.

For families, the appeal is simple: an outing that feels festive without requiring a full day of planning. For Union Square businesses, the rink also creates another reason for residents and visitors to linger, shop and eat downtown.

This year's opening celebration runs from 5 to 7 p.m. on November 4, with on-ice performances. The first 100 guests at the 5:30 and 7 p.m. sessions can skate free with advance registration, according to organizers.

What it costs to skate

Regular admission is $22, or $17 for children ages eight and under, including skate rental. Sessions last 60 minutes and begin every 90 minutes. The rink generally operates from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, although special events and holiday schedules can affect availability. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Free lessons and themed nights

Weekend Learn to Skate sessions are free for selected registrants, including skate rental, through a lottery system. The registration window for December and January lessons runs November 2–23. Spaces are limited, and selection does not guarantee a particular session.

The schedule also includes themed Wednesday nights, Classical Sundays, and special events such as Drag on Ice and a Silent Skate Party. November 11's Onesies Wednesday and November 18's Rhinestone Rink are among the early themed dates.

Make it a downtown outing

The rink is at 333 Post Street, close to Powell Street BART and several Muni lines. Consider pairing skating with a meal or shopping in Union Square. Dress in layers and bring gloves, especially for evening sessions.

More holiday activities will be announced as November unfolds. Check event organizers directly before committing to dates or ticket purchases.
